Nigeria’s young cricketers did not squeeze through the qualification door.
They smashed it open.
Nigeria’s U19 men defeated Mozambique by a staggering 407 runs in Kigali, securing their place in the 2027 ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup Africa Qualifier with one of the competition’s most destructive performances.
Mozambique were dismissed for just 54, while Nigeria’s batting charge was driven by centuries from Peculiar Egemasi and Bright Nyong.
The victory guaranteed Nigeria progression to the next stage of Africa’s qualification pathway.
Egemasi delivers with bat and ball
Egemasi was at the centre of the damage.
He scored 123 from 84 balls, hitting 18 fours and one six, before adding another extraordinary contribution with the ball.
The all-rounder also claimed what the ICC recorded as the first hat-trick of the tournament.
Bright Nyong provided even more explosive hitting.
Nyong smashed 137 from only 53 deliveries, including 12 sixes, while Hosanna Omonkhobhio contributed 84 from 73 balls.
Nigeria then completed the demolition with the ball.
Kenneth Boniface returned figures of three wickets for 13 runs as Mozambique were bowled out for 54.
The final margin was enormous.
407 runs.
And with it came qualification.
One stage closer — not at the World Cup yet
The distinction is important.
Nigeria have not qualified directly for the 2028 ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup.
The competition in Rwanda is the Africa Qualifier Division 2, with the leading teams progressing to the 2027 Africa Qualifier.
Nigeria have secured one of those progression places alongside Uganda and Rwanda.
The next stage will bring a stronger field and another fight for World Cup qualification.
So Thursday’s result was a breakthrough.
It was not the final destination.
