Fenerbahce’s Champions League qualification has been followed by a disciplinary cost.
Matteo Guendouzi faces an immediate two-match absence from UEFA club competition after being sanctioned over the disorder that followed Fenerbahce’s Champions League play-off against Lyon. The French midfielder received a four-match UEFA club-competition suspension. Two matches were deferred under a one-year probationary period, according to the UEFA disciplinary decision as reported by AFP.
He was also fined €50,000.
The structure of the punishment means Guendouzi must serve two matches immediately. The remaining two are suspended subject to the conditions of the probationary period.
Greenwood also sanctioned
The forward received a one-match suspended ban and a €30,000 fine over the same post-match episode.
Unlike Guendouzi, Greenwood does not face an immediate one-game absence unless the suspended sanction is activated under the terms of the disciplinary measure.
The sanctions followed Fenerbahce’s Champions League play-off victory over Lyon.
Fenerbahce won the second leg 2-1 and advanced 3-2 on aggregate. Confrontations after the final whistle quickly shifted attention away from the qualification itself.
Guendouzi drew the heavier punishment, with the reported UEFA findings citing insulting conduct, provocation of spectators and breaches of rules governing decent conduct.
The disciplinary decision now creates a direct football consequence.
Fenerbahce have reached the Champions League league phase, but Guendouzi is set to miss two European matches unless the sanction is altered through the appeal process.
The Turkish club have indicated that they intend to challenge the punishments.
That keeps the story alive beyond the initial ruling.
For Fenerbahce, qualification is secure. Guendouzi, the immediate price is two matches out.
For Greenwood, the sanction hangs over him rather than removing him immediately.
