João Fonseca has cleared one heavyweight obstacle in Montreal. The reward is another.
The 19-year-old Brazilian defeated ninth seed Casper Ruud 7-6(6), 6-3 at the National Bank Open to reach the last 16, setting up a collision with fifth seed and defending champion Ben Shelton.
Fonseca did not cruise into the matchup. He gave Ruud seven break-point opportunities across his opening three service games and fell 2-4 behind before recovering the break and turning the first set around.
From there, the pressure shifted.
Fonseca came from 3-5 down in the first-set tie-break, closed it out and then prevented Ruud from creating another break point in the second set.
That recovery gives the next round its edge.
Shelton arrives not simply as another seeded opponent, but as the reigning Canadian Masters champion. The American won the title in Toronto in 2025 and is now trying to defend it as the tournament returns to Montreal.
He reinforced that threat by beating Zizou Bergs 6-3, 6-2 to reach the last 16.
Neither Shelton nor Fonseca has dropped a set through two victories in Montreal.
And there is already history between them.
Shelton defeated Fonseca in their Munich quarter-final earlier this season, giving the Brazilian an immediate opportunity to turn an earlier defeat into a major Masters statement.
Fonseca survives the pressure
The victory over Ruud carried its own warning for Shelton.
Fonseca was pushed hard early and still found a route out.
After losing serve in the opening set, he broke straight back and gradually imposed himself from the baseline. Once he secured the first set, Ruud never created another break opportunity.
The win was Fonseca’s fourth victory over a Top-20 opponent this season and his second win over Ruud after also beating the Norwegian at Roland Garros earlier in 2026.
It also took him into an ATP Masters 1000 fourth round for the third time.
Now the difficulty rises again.
Shelton carries experience, home-continent momentum and title-defence pressure. Fonseca brings youth, heavy baseline aggression and a Montreal run that has already survived its first serious stress test.
One of them will leave the last 16 with momentum strengthened. The other will discover how quickly a promising Masters run can end.
Fonseca has already taken out Ruud. To keep Montreal moving, he now has to go through the champion.
