Nigeria’s Falconets have put a win behind their final push toward the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. Mary Mamudu scored in first-half stoppage time as Nigeria defeated Poland 1-0 in an international friendly in Brzeg, giving Moses Aduku’s side a positive result as the final phase of their World Cup preparation intensifies.
Mamudu struck in the 45th minute plus one, and the goal proved enough to settle a tight contest. Neither side scored after the break.
For Nigeria, the value goes beyond the scoreline. The Falconets are already in Poland preparing for a tournament in which there will be little room for a slow start. The Poland friendly forms part of Nigeria’s closing preparation programme, with Korea Republic also lined up as a warm-up opponent before the tournament begins.
That makes the 1-0 victory an important match test for a side trying to sharpen its structure before the pressure rises.
And the pressure ahead is clear.
Nigeria are in Group F alongside Spain, China PR and New Caledonia. The Falconets open their campaign against Spain on September 7. Nigeria will also face China PR and New Caledonia in Group F.
Spain immediately raises the level of the challenge. Nigeria will need more than confidence when the tournament begins. They will need defensive control, clean transitions and enough attacking precision to punish the limited openings elite youth opponents tend to allow.
Against Poland, one goal was enough. That is not a spectacular scoreline.
But it is useful preparation.
Aduku’s team entered the final phase of preparation after an intensive camp, with the focus on physical readiness, tactical organization, teamwork and mental sharpness. The Poland game offered an opportunity to test that work under match pressure. Mamudu supplied the decisive moment. Now the question is whether Nigeria can turn a narrow warm-up victory into something more significant when the World Cup begins.
The Falconets know this tournament well. Nigeria have never missed the competition and have twice reached the final, finishing runners-up in 2010 and 2014. That history creates expectation. It also creates unfinished business. A 1-0 friendly win will not decide what happens at the World Cup.
But with Spain waiting in Group F, winning while preparation time is running out is a useful place to start.
The Falconets have taken the first step. The real test is getting closer.
