Inter Miami have made their move. With results sliding and pressure rising around one of Major League Soccer’s most recognisable, star-heavy squads, the club have reached an agreement for Cristian “Kily” González to become their new first-team head coach.
The takeover is not yet complete
Inter Miami say González will formally assume his duties once he receives the required United States work permits, meaning Guillermo Hoyos remains provisionally in charge until the Argentine and his staff arrive.
The defending MLS Cup champions are on a five-match winless run, increasing the pressure around a squad built around Lionel Messi and other established international names.
Their latest setback was a 2-1 home defeat to Toronto FC on August 23, a match in which Messi scored Miami’s only goal after Toronto struck twice in the second half.
Inter Miami HAVE recorded 11 wins, four losses and six draws for 39 points after that defeat.
The pressure around the coaching change therefore goes beyond replacing a name on the touchline. González is stepping toward a team built to win now.
Expectation in Miami has already been reset by success. Javier Mascherano led the club to the MLS Cup title and a record-breaking 2025 campaign before stepping down in April for personal reasons.
Hoyos took over on an interim basis, but Miami’s current run has increased the need for a permanent solution.
González gets the call
The former Argentina international brings substantial playing and coaching experience into the role. He began his senior managerial career with Rosario Central in 2020 and later coached Unión Santa Fe and Platense in Argentina. As a player, González represented Argentina and had major spells with Valencia, Inter Milan and Rosario Central.
But his reputation from the pitch will matter less than what he can do with the squad waiting for him in South Florida.
Miami possess elite attacking talent. They also carry elite expectations. Messi remains the gravitational centre of the project, while the rest of the squad gives the club enough experience and quality to demand immediate results. That makes González’s first challenge obvious.
He does not need to create ambition. He needs to restore control. Recent results have turned a championship defence into a pressure test, and Miami cannot afford for the current slump to become something deeper as the MLS season moves toward its decisive phase.
The new coach will be judged on whether he can turn a collection of major names back into a functioning winning team.
