The waiting is over.
Arsenal and Manchester City have named their teams for the first trophy fight of the new English season — and neither side has chosen a gentle introduction for its new arrivals.
Bruno Guimaraes and Christos Tzolis make full Arsenal debuts from the start. Elliot Anderson makes his Manchester City debut. All three walk directly into the Community Shield at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium.
Arsenal arrive as Premier League champions. City arrive as FA Cup winners and begin their first official match under Enzo Maresca after Pep Guardiola’s departure. The FA confirmed Cardiff as the venue because Wembley is unavailable this weekend.
This is a curtain-raiser by calendar.
The teamsheets suggest neither side intends to treat it like one.

CONFIRMED STARTING XIs
Arsenal
Raya; White, Gabriel, Mosquera, Calafiori; Lewis-Skelly, Bruno Guimaraes, Odegaard; Madueke, Tzolis; Havertz.
Martin Odegaard captains Arsenal. Guimaraes and Tzolis both make full debuts, while Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi and Bukayo Saka begin among the substitutes after limited or no pre-season minutes.
Manchester City
Donnarumma; Khusanov, Ruben Dias, Gvardiol, O’Reilly; Kovacic, Anderson, Foden; Semenyo, Doku; Haaland.
Ruben Dias captains City. Anderson makes his debut after joining from Nottingham Forest, with Erling Haaland restored to the starting attack alongside Jeremy Doku and Antoine Semenyo.
THE BIG TACTICAL QUESTION
Can Arsenal’s new midfield survive City before it can control City?
Arsenal’s most intriguing selection sits in the middle.
Myles Lewis-Skelly starts alongside Guimaraes and Odegaard, with Rice and Zubimendi held back on the bench. Arsenal therefore begin a trophy match with a midfield combination carrying enormous technical promise but little competitive history together.
City answer with Kovacic and Anderson around a central structure that also contains Foden, while Doku and Semenyo provide the width around Haaland. City’s own match-centre analysis expects Anderson to partner Kovacic centrally, with Foden, Semenyo and Doku operating in the spaces behind the striker.
That creates the first pressure point of the afternoon:
If Arsenal beat City’s first press, Odegaard can begin receiving facing forward. If City disrupt the Guimaraes-Lewis-Skelly connection early, Arsenal could spend the opening phase chasing transitions instead of controlling possession.
That is CranseSports tactical analysis derived from the confirmed teams.
BATTLE ONE — GUIMARAES vs ANDERSON
There is no warm-up act for either midfielder.
Guimaraes has been handed a central role immediately by Mikel Arteta. Anderson has gone straight into Maresca’s first official City XI despite only recently joining up with his new teammates following the World Cup.
For Arsenal, Guimaraes can become the bridge between the first phase and Odegaard.
For City, Anderson offers the possibility of disrupting that bridge before Arsenal can establish rhythm.
The player who settles fastest could change the entire temperature of the midfield.
BATTLE TWO — DOKU AND SEMENYO ATTACK THE EDGES
City possess an obvious route to pressure.
Doku on one side. Semenyo on the other. Haaland occupying the centre.
Maresca’s stated tactical approach has included creating one-against-one situations for his wingers, while Arsenal’s official match preview describes City morphing toward a 3-2-2-3 in possession.
That means Ben White and Riccardo Calafiori face a problem that extends beyond simply stopping a winger.
If Arsenal’s wide defenders step too aggressively and possession breaks down, City have the personnel to attack the space behind them immediately.
BATTLE THREE — HAALAND vs GABRIEL AND MOSQUERA
Arsenal enter without William Saliba, who is undergoing rehabilitation on a back problem, while Jurrien Timber is still returning from a groin injury. Arsenal therefore start Gabriel and Cristhian Mosquera in the defensive unit facing Haaland.
The danger is not only Haaland’s finishing.
His positioning can force Arsenal’s centre-backs inward and create room for the runners around him.
If Gabriel and Mosquera become consumed by Haaland, Foden, Doku and Semenyo can attack the spaces that open around the duel.
BATTLE FOUR — CAN ØDEGAARD FIND THE POCKET?
Odegaard remains Arsenal’s captain and primary high-level organiser.
For Arsenal, the difference between receiving with his back to goal and receiving on the half-turn could be enormous.
If Kovacic and Anderson keep him facing away from City’s goal, Arsenal may be pushed into wider, slower circulation.
If he escapes that screen, Madueke and Tzolis have a passer capable of releasing them before City’s defensive structure resets.
BATTLE FIVE — MADUEKE AND TZOLIS TEST CITY’S NEW SHAPE
Arsenal start Noni Madueke and debutant Tzolis around Kai Havertz. City counter with a back line of Khusanov, Dias, Gvardiol and O’Reilly.
Madueke offers direct isolation threat.
Tzolis brings the uncertainty of a new attacker City have not yet faced competitively in an Arsenal shirt.
If Arsenal can shift City horizontally before switching play, either winger may get the one-on-one situations Arteta will want.
THE MANAGER PRESSURE
For Arteta, this is the first competitive act after Arsenal’s title-winning campaign. He said before the game that his intention was to begin the season by lifting the first trophy available.
For Maresca, the symbolism is even sharper.
This is his first official City match, and he made clear beforehand that he sees the Community Shield as a trophy to be won rather than merely a friendly exercise.
One manager is trying to start a title defence with another piece of silverware.
The other is trying to announce a new era immediately.
HISTORY BOARD
Arsenal have won 17 Community Shields, including shared titles, with only Manchester United ahead of them. They have also won their last five appearances in the competition.
City won their most recent Shield appearance in 2024, beating Manchester United on penalties. Arsenal, however, have won all three previous Community Shield meetings with City — in 1934, 2014 and 2023.
The 2023 meeting also went to penalties after a draw, with Arsenal taking the trophy.
WHAT COULD DECIDE IT
1. Arsenal’s first pass under pressure
Guimaraes and Lewis-Skelly cannot allow City to turn central turnovers into immediate Haaland attacks.
2. City’s width
Doku and Semenyo can force Arsenal to defend the full width of the pitch and create space centrally.
3. Ødegaard’s receiving positions
If Arsenal’s captain repeatedly receives between City’s midfield and defence, the champions can dictate the game’s attacking rhythm.
4. Haaland’s gravity
Even without touching the ball, his movement can distort Arsenal’s defensive spacing.
5. The bench
Rice, Saka, Zubimendi, Eze and Gyokeres are among Arsenal’s substitutes, while City have options including Cherki, Marmoush, Grealish and Guehi. The second half could become a very different tactical contest.
AFRICA WATCH
Antoine Semenyo gives the game a direct Africa-relevant thread from City’s starting attack.
His role opposite Doku gives City pace and direct running on both wings, while his positioning around Haaland will be worth tracking once the game begins. City’s own live match centre highlighted Semenyo as a major attacking threat after his strong pre-season.
CRANSESPORTS FRAME
A trophy is on the table.
But the more revealing contest may be underneath it.
Arsenal are testing a new midfield around Guimaraes.
City are testing a new manager, a new central presence in Anderson and a wide attack built to stretch opponents until the spaces appear.
New midfield. New City. Same pressure.
Guimaraes and Anderson have been thrown directly into the furnace.
Now the first competitive whistle decides who looks ready.
