Nigeria’s road into the 2026/27 CAF Champions League group-stage fight is now clear.
Rangers International and Rivers United have been handed their first continental tests after CAF completed the preliminary-round draw for Africa’s premier club competition.
Rangers will face SOBEMAP FC of Benin, while Rivers United have been paired with FC San Pedro of Côte d’Ivoire in the first preliminary round.
The opening legs are scheduled for 4–6 September, putting both Nigerian clubs immediately into a campaign where early mistakes can turn continental ambition into an early exit.
CAF confirmed that 61 clubs have entered the 2026/27 Champions League, creating another crowded route towards the group stage and eventually the continental crown.
The draw turns preparation into pressure
Neither Nigerian side has been handed a route that can be treated as ceremonial.
SOBEMAP bring a neighbouring West African challenge for Rangers, while Rivers United face a Côte d’Ivoire opponent in FC San Pedro.
The names may not carry the profile of Africa’s biggest clubs, but preliminary-round football can quickly punish complacency once travel, conditions and two-leg pressure enter the equation.
For Nigerian football, the stakes run deeper than two individual ties.
Both clubs carry the burden of trying to build a stronger Nigerian presence in CAF competition and push the domestic game deeper into the continent’s biggest club tournament.

That makes the first legs important.
A controlled opening performance would give either side room to manage the return fixture. A poor start could turn the second leg into a rescue mission before the competition has properly taken shape.
Rangers will know that facing opposition from neighbouring Benin leaves little room for complacency.
Rivers United, meanwhile, must negotiate a West African contest against FC San Pedro with the discipline required for knockout football over two legs.
The draw also gives Nigerian football an early continental measuring point.
Can Rangers impose themselves quickly?
Can Rivers United control the pressure of the opening round?
And can both representatives avoid the kind of early damage that can end a continental campaign before the competition reaches its most valuable stages?
Those answers will begin to arrive in September.
For now, the path is known.
Rangers have SOBEMAP.
Rivers United have FC San Pedro.
Nigeria has two clubs carrying its Champions League hopes and the first continental pressure test is already on the calendar.
