Nigeria’s D’Tigers were handed a hard reminder of how unforgiving the road to the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup can become after Cameroon controlled them 78-62 in Radès, Tunisia.
The defeat was not built on one disastrous quarter. It was sustained. Nigeria scored 14, 18, 16 and 14 points across the four quarters and never reached 20 points in any period.
Cameroon took control early, leading 23-14 after the opening quarter, and kept Nigeria at arm’s length for most of the contest.
The shooting numbers
Nigeria made just 24% of their field-goal attempts, compared with Cameroon’s 40%. Inside the arc, D’Tigers converted 32.4% of their two-point shots. From three-point range, the number fell to 17.4%.
Those figures gave Cameroon exactly the type of game they wanted. Cameroon’s defensive plan focused on closing Nigeria’s routes to the basket and forcing contested perimeter attempts.
The strategy held. Nigeria struggled to create consistent interior pressure and never produced the kind of sustained scoring run needed to flip momentum.
Yves Missi was central to that control. The Cameroon centre finished with 24 points, nine rebounds and four blocks, giving his team both scoring power and a major defensive presence around the rim.
Cameroon led for more than 34 minutes and stretched the margin as high as 19 points. Nigeria’s largest lead was four. That gap in control is what makes the defeat more significant than the final score alone. D’Tigers were not simply outscored. They were forced into an inefficient offensive night and never found a reliable alternative once Cameroon dictated the shape of the game.
For Nigeria, the consequence is clear
A qualification campaign at this level does not leave much room for repeated offensive nights like this. The next phase of the campaign will demand a sharper response in shot selection, ball movement and half-court execution if D’Tigers are to avoid turning one damaging defeat into a wider qualification problem.
Cameroon exposed the weakness. Nigeria now have to prove it was temporary.
