Nigeria left Abidjan without the African title but with something bigger already secured.
The Junior D’Tigress have booked their place at the 2027 FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup in China after reaching the final of the 2026 FIBA U18 Women’s AfroBasket.
Nigeria sealed qualification with a tense 53–50 semi-final victory over hosts Côte d’Ivoire.
It was a game built on resistance rather than comfort.
The Junior D’Tigress led 27–23 at half-time, survived an Ivorian response after the break and edged the fourth quarter 12–11 to close out the three-point win.
Captain Favour Anari scored 15 points in the semi-final, while Zainab Adelaja posted Nigeria’s highest efficiency rating. Nimah Ibidunni collected 12 rebounds and Oluwatobiloba Owolabi added 11 points as Nigeria held off the hosts.
That victory delivered the world-stage ticket. The final delivered another lesson.

Mali beat Nigeria 77–68 to retain their continental dominance and complete a third successive U18 Women’s AfroBasket title.
Couda Keita led Mali with 25 points, while Anari responded with 23 points and 10 rebounds for Nigeria.
Nigeria never led the final, with Mali taking control early and carrying a 39–30 advantage into half-time. The Junior D’Tigress matched Mali with 25 points in the fourth quarter, but the opening deficit proved too heavy to erase.
The defeat denied Nigeria a first U18 Women’s AfroBasket title.
It also marked their third runner-up finish in the competition and a second consecutive final defeat to Mali after the 76–56 loss in the 2024 championship game.
Yet the larger pathway remains intact.
By reaching the final, Nigeria claimed one of Africa’s two places at the 2027 FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup alongside Mali.

The country also featured at the 2025 U19 Women’s World Cup, and another qualification gives the next generation of Nigerian players a fresh opportunity to test themselves at the highest global age-group level.
For a nation whose senior women’s team has already built continental stature, the youth pathway carries its own pressure.
Qualification alone is not the ceiling.
Nigeria reached another African final. They pushed Mali harder than they did two years ago. They earned another place on the global stage.
But Mali still own the continental standard at this level.
That is the challenge waiting for the Junior D’Tigress after Abidjan: turn repeated final appearances into the title Nigeria are still chasing.
For now, though, the world ticket is secured.
China 2027 is next.
