Awoniyi Joins Coventry City as Arsenal Test Looms on Premier League Opening Night
Taiwo Awoniyi has opened a new Premier League chapter with Coventry City, completing a permanent move from Nottingham Forest just days before the newly promoted side begin their top-flight campaign away to Arsenal.
Coventry confirmed the transfer on Monday, bringing in the 29-year-old Nigeria striker after four seasons at Forest.
The club says Awoniyi scored 21 Premier League goals in 90 appearances for Nottingham Forest and 23 times in 103 games across all competitions during his spell at the City Ground.
For Awoniyi, the timing immediately gives the move an edge.
Coventry’s first Premier League match of the season comes away to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Friday, 21 August.
That does not guarantee Awoniyi a starting place.
Frank Lampard’s team selection will only become clear closer to kick-off, but the fixture means the Super Eagles forward has arrived with almost no settling-in period before Coventry are thrown into one of the hardest possible opening assignments.
Awoniyi said after completing the move that he was happy to join Coventry and eager to begin working with his new teammates.
The move also gives Coventry something particularly valuable as they return to the Premier League: a striker with established experience of England’s top division.
Awoniyi joined Nottingham Forest in 2022 after spells across Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, including a productive period with Union Berlin.
His first season at Forest delivered 11 goals and helped the club preserve its Premier League status.
The seasons that followed were less straightforward, with injuries interrupting his rhythm and reducing his opportunities, but he leaves Forest with a proven top-flight scoring record and another chance to establish himself as a central attacking figure.
Reports have placed the transfer fee at around £9 million, although Coventry did not disclose a figure in the club announcement.
That means the fee remains a reported amount rather than an officially confirmed club figure.
What matters more now is what Awoniyi does with the opportunity.
Coventry have not signed him simply for his Premier League résumé. They have brought in a striker who understands the physical demands, defensive pressure and narrow margins of England’s top flight.
For Awoniyi, the move also creates a fresh Nigerians Abroad storyline at a point in his career where sustained minutes and attacking responsibility could matter significantly.
And Arsenal immediately gives that storyline a pressure point.
If selected, Awoniyi could begin life at Coventry against one of the league’s biggest sides, in a stadium where newly promoted teams are rarely given time to settle.
If he begins from the bench, Coventry would still have a forward with Premier League experience available as the game develops.
There is no need to turn that possibility into certainty before Lampard names his team.
The confirmed fact already carries enough weight:
Taiwo Awoniyi is a Coventry City player — and Arsenal are waiting at the start of his next Premier League chapter.
