Jessica Oji delivers world U20 gold for Nigeria with 18.08m throw
Jessica Oji has put Nigeria on top of the world at U20 level.
The 19-year-old Nigerian won the women’s shot-put title at the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships in Oregon, producing an 18.08m throw in the final to beat Ecuador’s Belsy Jenniffer Quiñone and Germany’s Emily Scherf to gold.
Quiñone took silver with 17.90m, while Scherf claimed bronze at 17.23m.
For Nigeria, it was a world-title breakthrough built on a performance Oji had already threatened during qualification.
From qualification leader to world champion
Oji led qualification with 17.56m, putting herself at the front of the field before the medal round.
But the final demanded more.
Quiñone reached 17.90m, leaving only 18 centimetres between gold and silver. Oji responded with the throw that mattered most — 18.08m.
Qualification showed she had the distance to contend.
The final showed she could deliver when the title was actually on the line.
Her winning throw was not even the best mark of her season. Oji entered Oregon with an 18.50m personal best, underlining the level she had already reached before becoming world champion.
Nigeria gets a major field-event signal
The result gives Nigerian athletics another important development beyond the sprint lanes.
Nigeria’s biggest international athletics stories often come from the 100m, 200m, hurdles and relays. Oji’s world title offers something different: a global U20 champion emerging from a technical field event.
That matters.
It gives Nigeria another young athlete capable of competing at world level in an area where international medals are harder to produce consistently.
Oji also competes in the discus, adding another dimension to her profile as one of Nigeria’s emerging throwing talents.
The margin was small. The statement was not.
Eighteen centimetres separated gold from silver.
Oji owned those centimetres.
At a world championship where one poor series can erase months of preparation, Nigeria’s thrower found enough distance under pressure to leave Oregon with the biggest prize available.
