Heartland FC’s road back to the Nigeria Premier Football League is already carrying heavyweight pressure, with Remo Stars and Sunshine Stars among the established names shaping the Owerri club’s 2026/27 Nigeria National League challenge.
Heartland find themselves in Conference A alongside Remo Stars, Sunshine Stars and Crown FC as preparations gather pace for the new campaign. The full conference arrangement has been reported as part of a proposed 34-club structure split across four groups.
The route back to Nigeria’s top flight
For Heartland, the headline is bigger than the draw itself: another route back to Nigeria’s top flight will have to be earned against clubs carrying their own promotion pressure.
Remo Stars arrive in the second tier after one of the sharpest reversals in recent domestic football history. The Ikenne side, champions only a season earlier, were relegated from the NPFL in May after a 1-1 final-day draw at Bendel Insurance left them below the survival line. The NPFL subsequently confirmed Remo Stars among the four relegated clubs.
That immediately gives Heartland another major obstacle in a promotion race that already promises little room for recovery.
Sunshine Stars add another familiar top-flight name to the equation, while Crown FC provide an immediate pressure point. The NNL has fixed October 31, 2026 for the start of the new season, with Heartland against Crown identified as the opening star fixture before the remaining Matchday 1 games follow on the November 7 weekend.
Heartland are facing a conference loaded with clubs capable of turning the promotion race into a fight from the opening weeks.
Very little margin for a slow start
Heartland’s recent history has made promotion pressure familiar territory. A club with deep Nigerian top-flight pedigree now has to translate preparation into consistency over a second-tier campaign where dropped points can quickly change the shape of a promotion chase.
And Remo Stars’ presence changes the temperature.
Their relegation means Conference A could contain a side coming directly from an NPFL title defence, alongside Heartland and Sunshine Stars clubs with their own top-flight histories and expectations. That gives the group an edge beyond routine second-tier competition.
For Heartland, every major fixture will carry two contests at once: points on the table and the larger argument over whether the club is ready to reclaim an NPFL place.
