Carlos Baleba is no longer a Manchester United target. He is now part of the rebuild. United have completed the signing of the 22-year-old Cameroon midfielder from Brighton & Hove Albion, handing him a contract until June 2031 with the option of a further year.
For Baleba, the move takes the Cameroon international from Brighton into one of the Premier League’s most demanding environments. Baleba made 112 appearances for Brighton and scored four goals after arriving from Lille in 2023. The exact financial structure has not been officially disclosed by either club. There are reports that has placed the deal at an initial £65 million, potentially rising to £70 million through add-ons.
Whatever the final number, Baleba arrives carrying immediate responsibility. Manchester United’s own profile highlights the qualities that pushed him into the club’s midfield plans. In the 2024/25 Premier League season, his combined tackles and interceptions ranked sixth among midfielders, while he was fourth for progressive ball carries per 90 minutes. Baleba ranked inside the top eight per cent of Premier League players for combined tackles and interceptions in 2025/26 and inside the top one per cent for second balls won.
Those numbers help explain the attraction. Baleba is not being brought in simply to circulate possession. His game is built around recovering the ball, covering space and driving forward through pressure, qualities that can make him especially valuable in a midfield required to survive transitions as well as control matches.
That is also where the scrutiny begins. Moving from Brighton to Manchester United changes the scale of every mistake, every misplaced pass and every big performance. At Old Trafford, development time is rarely quiet.
For Cameroon, the transfer puts another national-team midfielder at the centre of a major Premier League rebuild. Baleba was born in Douala and began his career with Futur Soccer before progressing through the Ecole de Football des Brasseries du Cameroun academy. He later moved to Lille, where he made his senior breakthrough before Brighton brought him to England. His rise has now taken him from Cameroon to France, Brighton and Manchester United before his 23rd birthday.
Brighton sporting director Mike Cave said Baleba had developed into “an outstanding Premier League midfielder” during his spell with the club and confirmed that the player wanted to make the move. Now comes the harder part.
Manchester United have bought the athleticism, ball-winning power and progression. Baleba has to prove he can turn those qualities into control when Old Trafford pressure starts asking the bigger questions.
