Nigeria’s reign as African champions is over.
Cameroon eliminated the defending champions from the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, ending the Super Falcons’ title defence before the semi-finals and guaranteeing that Africa will crown a new champion.
The defeat carries a consequence far bigger than the trophy.
WAFCON 2026 is also Africa’s qualification route to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. The four teams reaching the semi-finals qualify automatically, meaning Cameroon did two jobs at once against Nigeria: they knocked out the holders and secured their own World Cup ticket.
Nigeria have been pushed onto the harder road
The Super Falcons can no longer qualify directly through the semi-finals and must now rely on the tournament’s repechage route to stay alive in the race for Brazil 2027.
The quarter-finals have also reshaped the balance of power across African women’s football. Morocco eliminated South Africa 2–1 to reach the last four and secure another World Cup appearance.
Algeria made history by reaching the semi-finals and qualifying for the Women’s World Cup for the first time. Malawi also broke new ground, reaching a first WAFCON semi-final and booking a maiden place on the global stage.
The result is a dramatically altered tournament.
Nigeria are out.
South Africa are out.
Ghana are out.
And a WAFCON field that began with several established continental powers will now produce a new champion.
For Cameroon, Morocco, Algeria and Malawi, reaching the semi-finals has already delivered World Cup qualification.
For Nigeria, the pressure is different
The Super Falcons entered Morocco as defending champions and as one of Africa’s most established teams on the global stage. Their quarter-final exit has transformed the final days of the tournament from a title defence into a fight simply to preserve their World Cup pathway.
That is what the repechage now represents.
It is not direct qualification.
It is one more chance to reach FIFA’s inter-confederation Play-Off Tournament and keep the road to Brazil open.
The African crown is gone. Nigeria’s World Cup fight is not.
