Africa’s final push for extra places at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup has taken shape, with Ghana and South Africa handed different opening tests in the intercontinental play-off tournament.
FIFA confirmed after its preliminary-phase draw in Zurich that Ghana will face Ecuador on Matchday 1, while South Africa will meet Chinese Taipei. Uzbekistan will play Papua New Guinea in the other opening fixture.
For Ghana and South Africa, there is little room for a slow start. The preliminary phase will bring together Ghana, South Africa, Chinese Taipei, Uzbekistan, Ecuador and Papua New Guinea during the international window running from November 24 to December 5, 2026.
Each team will play three matches, with only the top two sides progressing to the next phase.
Ghana and South Africa face different routes
Ghana begin against Ecuador before taking on Uzbekistan and Papua New Guinea. South Africa open against Chinese Taipei, then face Ecuador before closing their preliminary schedule against Uzbekistan.

With six teams chasing only two progression places, one poor result could quickly reshape the qualification picture.
Surviving the first phase is only half the fight
Even finishing in the top two will not secure a World Cup place. The two teams that emerge from the preliminary phase will progress to the final play-off phase, scheduled for the international window from February 23 to March 6, 2027.
They will join four teams entering directly at that stage, with the six sides then drawn into three knockout paths. The winner of each path will qualify for the World Cup. For Ghana and South Africa, that means the road to Brazil requires surviving two separate qualification battles.
Africa has four direct places at the 2027 tournament, with Ghana and South Africa carrying the continent’s remaining hopes through the play-off route.
Pressure starts now
FIFA has confirmed the draw and competition structure, but the exact venues, individual match dates and kick-off times for the preliminary phase are still to be announced. That leaves both African teams with their opponents locked but some operational details still to come.
What is already clear is the scale of the task.
Three preliminary matches. Two progression places. Another knockout phase beyond that.
For Ghana and South Africa, the road to Brazil now has shape and no margin for drift.
