African women’s football could be heading for another major structural change.
The Confederation of African Football is studying the possible introduction of an U17 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations from 2027, provided the required sporting and organisational conditions are met.
The proposal could give Africa’s teenage female footballers another dedicated continental stage and place greater competitive pressure on national youth-development systems.
But there is an important line that has not yet been crossed.
CAF has not announced the competition as finally approved. The governing body’s position is that the tournament remains under consideration.
That still makes the development significant.
A dedicated U17 Women’s AFCON could create another competitive layer between domestic youth football and the senior international game, giving emerging players more exposure to continental opposition at a crucial stage of their development.
For Nigeria, that possibility carries particular interest.
A new African championship at U17 level could increase the competitive demands around scouting, preparation and player development while creating another continental platform for the country’s emerging female footballers.
It would also give federations across Africa another measure of how effectively their youth structures are producing players capable of competing beyond domestic football.
The proposal arrives as CAF continues reshaping its broader youth competition calendar, with Ghana, Morocco and Egypt among countries assigned major continental youth tournaments for 2027.
That wider expansion gives the proposed women’s U17 competition additional weight.
If CAF moves from study to approval, African women’s football will gain another battleground for its next generation.
For now, the idea is on the table.
The final decision still belongs to CAF.
