Super Falcons defender Tosin Demehin has joined Benfica on a contract running until 2029, opening another major European chapter for one of Nigeria’s leading defenders. Benfica officially announced the 24-year-old centre-back on Monday, confirming that she has signed a three-season deal ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
For Demehin, Lisbon becomes the latest stop in a career that has steadily moved through increasingly demanding football environments.
She began her senior career in Nigeria with Sunshine Queens and Rivers Angels before joining French side Stade de Reims in 2022. Two years later, she moved to Galatasaray in Turkey.
Now comes Benfica.
The Portuguese club have also handed Demehin the No. 4 shirt, placing her inside a side carrying the expectations that come with sustained domestic success.
That raises the pressure immediately. Demehin is not arriving simply as another Nigerian player abroad. She is stepping into a squad where winning is expected and competition for places is part of the job. Her international experience gives the move even greater weight.
The defender has represented Nigeria at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, while remaining part of the Super Falcons’ senior setup.
For Nigeria, that matters.
Another Super Falcons defender competing regularly in a strong European environment strengthens the pool of players operating under high weekly demands before future international windows. Benfica also gives Demehin a familiar Nigerian connection.
She said she spoke with Super Falcons teammate Christy Ucheibe about the club before completing the move, providing a direct national-team reference point as she considered the next stage of her career. Demehin will also join fellow Nigeria international Flourish Chioma Sabastine, another Benfica addition on a deal running through 2029. That creates a growing Nigerian presence inside Benfica’s women’s project.
For Demehin, however, the challenge is personal.
France tested her.

Now Portugal offers a new standard.
Benfica have brought her in to defend, compete and help a winning side keep winning.
