The Super Eagles have been drawn in Group L of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers alongside Madagascar, Tanzania and Guinea-Bissau, placing immediate pressure on Nigeria’s next continental campaign.
And the first test is expected to come against Madagascar.
The Super Eagles are expected to begin the qualifying campaign at home to Madagascar in Uyo, although CAF and the Nigeria Football Federation have not yet published a current fixture notice confirming the venue and match order.
The wider qualification picture
CAF has placed the opening two matchdays inside the international window running from September 21 to October 6, 2026, giving Nigeria their first opportunity to seize control of a group with an unusual qualification dynamic.
Tanzania are co-hosts of AFCON 2027 and are already guaranteed a place at the finals.
That leaves Nigeria, Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau competing for the remaining direct qualification place available to the non-host teams in Group L.
For the Super Eagles, that sharply raises the value of every result.
A poor opening window would not simply mean dropped points. It could immediately give one of Nigeria’s direct qualification rivals the advantage in a race with less margin for error than a conventional group.
That is why the Madagascar opener carries weight.
If the Uyo fixture is confirmed, Nigeria would have the chance to start at home against one of the teams directly competing for the same qualification route.
Madagascar cannot be treated as background opposition
Neither can Guinea-Bissau, who have already shown they can trouble Nigeria in competitive football. The NFF itself referenced Guinea-Bissau’s previous victory in Abuja when announcing the new qualifying group.
Nigeria’s football authorities have also warned against complacency.
NFF technical director Austine Eguavoen has cautioned that Tanzania, Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau will require serious treatment, reinforcing the sense that reputation alone will not carry the Super Eagles through the group.
The exact fixture details still await a definitive CAF or NFF notice. The stakes do not.
Nigeria know who stand between them and AFCON 2027. They also know one of the four teams in the group already has a ticket.
For the Super Eagles, the fight is for the one that remains.
