Memphis Depay’s Corinthians exit has turned into a public dispute, with the Netherlands international accusing the Brazilian club of abandoning an agreement to extend his contract.
Corinthians announced on August 11 that Depay’s deal would not be renewed, saying the decision was driven by the club’s financial position and the need to protect long-term sustainability.
Depay has challenged that explanation.
In a public statement, the forward said a two-year renewal had already been agreed with club president Osmar Stabile and Corinthians’ sporting, legal and financial departments before the club changed course.
He described the handling of the situation as unacceptable and said he would act to protect his interests.
That leaves player and club presenting sharply different versions of how the relationship ended.
Corinthians have confirmed that renewal discussions took place but say a new commitment of that scale was ultimately incompatible with the financial balance the club needed to preserve.
The club also indicated that Stabile would provide further explanation publicly.
Depay leaves after a significant spell in São Paulo.
Corinthians’ official figures credit him with 79 appearances and 20 goals, while the club highlighted his role in three trophies: the 2025 Campeonato Paulista, the 2025 Copa do Brasil and the 2026 Supercopa Rei.
That contribution gives the dispute even more weight.
This is no longer simply the end of a contract. Corinthians say financial responsibility forced them to stop the renewal process.
Depay says an agreement to keep him had already been reached.
What remains unresolved is whether that understanding amounted to a binding contractual commitment a point CranseSports is not treating as established fact.
For now, the football relationship is finished.
The argument over how it ended is not.
