Promoted. Two Games. Two Wins. Doma United Are Already Making Their NPFL Return Count
Doma United have returned to the NPFL with purpose. A 2–0 opening victory over Sporting Lagos has now been followed by a 1–0 win away to Inter Lagos, giving the promoted side six points, three goals scored and none conceded from their first two matches. It is far too early to crown anything — but the start is already demanding attention.
Promotion Was Only the Beginning
Promotion brings celebration.
The real examination begins afterwards.
Doma United earned their return to the Nigeria Premier Football League with the obvious first objective of proving they belonged there.
Two matches into the new campaign, they have already given themselves something more interesting to defend:
a perfect start.
The Gombe side opened the season by beating Sporting Lagos 2–0.
Then came the first away examination.
Inter Lagos.
Another promoted side.
Another difficult contest.
Another Doma United victory.
Inter Lagos 0–1 Doma United.
Two matches.
Two wins.
Six points.
And perhaps most strikingly:
no goals conceded.
The sample is small.
The signal is not.
Sporting Lagos Set the Tone
The opening-day victory over Sporting Lagos provided the first indication that Doma were not interested in spending their first weeks back in the top flight simply trying to survive.
A 2–0 victory gave them three points.
But the clean sheet mattered too.
Promoted teams can often arrive with energy before being exposed by the speed and physical demands of the higher division.
Doma’s opening performance suggested greater control.
They scored.
They protected the lead.
They closed the game.
That was one match.
The question was whether they could repeat anything about it.
The answer came in Lagos.
Inter Lagos Made It a Pattern
Away victories reveal something different.
Home momentum can carry a newly promoted team.
Travel strips some of that comfort away.
Against Inter Lagos, Doma had to find another route.
This time there was no two-goal cushion.
There was no early separation.
The match remained tight.
According to Doma United’s official match report, they had an effort ruled out for offside, while goalkeeper Ibrahim Pius made an important one-on-one save as Inter Lagos threatened.
The contest stayed alive deep into the second half.
Then Doma found the breakthrough.
Rilwan Sadiq Found the Decisive Moment
The winner arrived through Rilwan Sadiq.
With the match still level, Sadiq converted the opportunity that changed Doma’s afternoon.
One goal.
That was enough.
And that is important.
There is a difference between a team capable of winning only when the game opens up and one capable of surviving a tight contest until a decisive moment appears.
Doma’s second victory came through the latter route.
They did not need three goals.
They did not need chaos.
They needed one breakthrough and then the discipline to protect it.
They found both.
Six Points. Zero Conceded.
The goals will attract attention.
The clean sheets may tell us more.
After two matches, Doma United have:
6 points
3 goals scored
0 goals conceded
Goalkeeper Ibrahim Pius has therefore begun the campaign with consecutive clean sheets.
Again, two games are not enough to establish a season-long defensive identity.
But there is still value in identifying what has worked.
Doma have not needed to chase matches.
They have not yet been forced into recovery mode.
They have scored first and then managed the consequences.
For a promoted side, that is a useful early habit.
Two games are not a season. But two wins without conceding are enough to make people look twice.
The Start Is Impressive — But Keep Perspective
There is an obvious temptation after a perfect opening.
Go too far.
Call Doma contenders.
Describe the table as transformed.
Turn six points into a prediction for the next eight months.
That would be premature.
Both of Doma’s opening opponents — Sporting Lagos and Inter Lagos — also came into the season from the promoted group.
That matters.
The performances should be credited.
The context should not disappear.
Doma have proved they can start quickly against teams navigating similar questions about life in the top division.
They have not yet proved what happens when they meet the league’s established powers.
That examination is coming.
And it could tell us much more.
Enyimba Is Where the Early Excitement Meets a Bigger Test
Next comes Enyimba.
That immediately changes the temperature.
Sporting Lagos provided the opening.
Inter Lagos confirmed the start.
Enyimba offers a different benchmark.
One of Nigerian football’s established heavyweight institutions.
A club accustomed to expectation.
A club against which an impressive two-match sequence can begin to acquire greater meaning.
The question is not whether Doma can become champions because they have six points.
That is the wrong conversation.
The better question is whether the structural qualities visible in their first two games — organisation, defensive discipline, patience and efficiency — survive against stronger established opposition.
Sporting Lagos and Inter Lagos built the start. Enyimba will tell us more about the level.
Doma Are Beginning to Create Their Own Pressure
There is another consequence to winning early.
Expectations move.
A promoted team can begin a season with freedom.
Every point feels valuable.
Every victory looks like progress.
But accumulate enough of them quickly and the psychology changes.
Suddenly supporters expect the next result.
Opponents start paying more attention.
The story stops being about promotion.
It becomes about performance.
Doma are not there yet.
But two straight victories have started that process.
Their return is no longer merely an administrative fact.
It has become a competitive story.
The Start Is Real. The Ceiling Is Still Being Tested.
There will be harder afternoons.
There will be matches when Doma concede first.
There will be periods when the goals do not arrive.
That is where the longer judgement will come from.
For now, the evidence is straightforward.
They returned to the NPFL.
They beat Sporting Lagos.
They travelled to Inter Lagos and won again.
They have taken every point available.
They have yet to concede.
That does not make Doma United title contenders.
It does make them one of the early stories worth watching.
Promoted.
Two games.
Two wins.
Six points.
Zero conceded.
The start is real.
Now Enyimba helps tell us how much it means.
