Roberto Martínez may be firmly inside the conversation around the vacant Netherlands job, but the strongest claim linking him to the KNVB has now been challenged.
Martínez’s representative, Jesse De Preter, says the former Portugal coach has not held direct talks with the Dutch football federation, cutting across earlier reports that suggested discussions with KNVB technical director Nigel de Jong had already taken place.
That distinction matters because the Netherlands are actively searching for a new head coach after Ronald Koeman decided not to extend his contract following the 2026 World Cup.
The KNVB confirmed Koeman’s departure on June 30, with De Jong saying the federation would assess the vacancy carefully while acknowledging that the start of the UEFA Nations League in September means there is some urgency around the appointment.

But De Preter has since clarified that no direct conversation between Martínez and the KNVB has yet taken place.

The Netherlands need a coach. Martínez is available. His name is circulating around one of international football’s most attractive vacancies. But there is a clear gap between being discussed as a candidate and being in formal negotiations.
For the KNVB, that gap matters as De Jong works through a succession process with the Nations League approaching.
For Martínez, it also matters after his Portugal tenure ended following the World Cup. His next move would immediately attract attention given his previous spells in international management with Belgium and Portugal.
The situation therefore remains alive, but not settled. Martínez is in the Netherlands coaching conversation. What has not been established is that he and the KNVB are already sitting across the table negotiating his arrival.
For now, the race remains open and the next authoritative move belongs to the KNVB or Martínez camp.
